Bernhard Langer was set to play in his final Masters Tournament this week. That put him a stroke ahead of Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning United States Open champion at the time, who consistently out-drove Langer by about 100 yards all week. Instead, the perennially fit Langer was felled by something that has likely taken down some of his Florida neighbors who aren’t two-time Masters champions: a pickleball injury. A neighbor who is a foot and ankle surgeon ran over when he saw Langer drop to the ground and sent Langer for an M.R.I. He had torn his Achilles’ tendon, and the doctor got him into a stabilizing boot so he wouldn’t injure his foot further.

CNN —Veteran golfer Bernhard Langer was due to play at The Masters for the final time this year, but a pickleball injury derailed his hopes of competing at next month’s tournament. The 66-year-old Langer, who won the green jacket in 1985 and 1993, would have been making his 41st appearance at The Masters had he not torn his Achilles while playing pickleball. “I play all sorts of sports to stay fit and this was part of my fitness regime,” Langer told the Musings on Golf podcast. Langer said that he has been making “very good” progress since undergoing surgery and will attend the annual champions dinner at Augusta National next month. The Masters, the first golf major of the calendar year, will take place between April 11 and 14 in Augusta, Georgia.

CNN —Tiger Woods shot a one-over-par 72 on his return to competitive PGA Tour action on Thursday at the Genesis Invitational, but finished his round with a huge shank to blot his outing. However, Woods admitted afterwards that he was dealing with back spasms for the final three holes of his round, something which helped to contribute to the shank on the 18th hole. Woods hits from a bunker on the 10th hole during the first round of the Genesis Invitational. Woods is chasing his first PGA Tour win since his record-equaling 82nd triumph at the Zozo Championship in October 2019. Woods has said he is aiming to play in one tournament a month this year.

CNN —Tiger Woods will make his first competitive start of the year at the Genesis Invitational next week, the 15-time major winner announced on social media Wednesday. Woods, chasing his first PGA Tour win since his record-equaling 82nd triumph at the Zozo Championship in October 2019, said he was “excited” to compete in an Instagram post announcing his participation on Wednesday. Woods celebrates his most recent PGA Tour victory at the 2019 Zozo Championship in Inzai, Japan. The duo finished tied-fifth out of 20 teams formed of past major or Players Championship winners and a family member at the Ritz-Carlton Club, six shots behind the winning pairing of Bernhard Langer and his son Jason. (AP) — Bernhard Langer tore his Achilles tendon while exercising and had surgery on Friday, putting the 66-year-old German out of golf during a year he planned to play the Masters one last time. Langer last year broke Hale Irwin's record for PGA Tour Champions victories when he won twice to reach 46 titles on the 50-and-older circuit. Masters champions have a lifetime exemption, and it's possible Langer could still return next year for one last Masters. “Yesterday, during training exercises in Boca Raton, I tore my Achilles tendon. “It’s going to be very emotional, especially Augusta, because it’s been a big part of my life,” Langer said.
